5Very Nice, But S9 Sounds Just A Little Better  Nov 17, 2010 By Cole K. "Cole"
I own both the Cowon S9 & The J3. For My perspectives, I also own three Sansa's (520, Clip & Fuze), three Ipods (Classic, Nano & Touch)! I have three pairs of Ultimate Ears ($100 pair); three so I always have a set in car, truck & for back up! The J3 screen has 1-7 brightness settings-a tad brighter than the S9 with 1-6 (otherwise their identical), As for sound quality, at full volume the J3 distorts a little more often where the S9 rarely does: (But this is Due To The J3 Playing A Little Louder at same vol numbers about 3% [0-40 vs Cowon S9 w/same eq settings]-might be good when using as external device on car stereo or powering large over head headphones)! Also, the J3 sounds just a tad harsher than the S9 - playing a little more highs than lows - almost like listening to an 80 watt amp car stereo vs a 100 watts (I'm Talking Very Subtle Difference For Those That Are Ultra Picky Audiophiles {Seems Like You Need To Turn The Treble Down Half A Point})! The J3 Does have all the EQ settings 5 bands/width of curve/and freq. with 4 user presets it saves!

It Does Play My AAC Itunes Files (Will Not Play APPLE LOSSLESS) - (Just Drag And Drop On The Music Folder Or Onto A Micro SD Card) it even played songs I purchased with Itunes! (The AAC and micro SD port are the only reasons I purchased the J3; besides being a Cowon!

The GUI (user interface) is nice, a drop down menu from above cover art reveals the EQ presets including 4 user and all the rest cowon is famous for plus in the top right corner is a M for home screen and top left back to list! I mostly listen to music but watch some music videos and view pictures so not commenting much on the video portion. I haven't seen a clearer/brighter screen IAMOLED (organic L.E.D. basically) but very nice!

My Only Complaints, Which Is Little, The Buttons! The Track Skip is high on the device right where your thumb naturally rests and the Volume is towards the bottom where it is awkward getting to (if you hold it with left hand your ring/little finger can control volume and index/middle track skip)! If a person skips tracks more than they play with the volume I suppose it's okay; however, track skip is also on the touchscreen but volume isn't, go figure I guess. And the speaker is all but a joke, my $100 straighttalk phone's speaker sounds twice as loud/clear. But you can tell what is playing when left in your shirt pocket (it does have Auto/On/Off setting for the speaker)

I'm keeping my S9 and giving the J3 to my Wife as long as I get to use it periodically for AAC files I don't want to tamper with & purchased (I might just burn to Disc then make them flac (Free Lossless Audio Codec) flac files are VERY LARGE roughly 50% of WAV file! I do like the micro SD feature)!

The J3 Sounds Excellent and is great at both video/music playing! However, My S9 32GB is just slightly better (I just wish the S9 played AAC & had a microSD slot like the J3(lol)!

5Best in Sound  Sep 22, 2010 By dasn0wman "dasn0wman"
I believe this player produces the best sound of any mp3 player out there. Sound coming out from my Grado SR60 or B&W P5 headset is just butter. Silky smooth and unlike any other mp3 player I tested. I also own the Sony Walkman X-series and Samsung P3, both strong competitors for best sound, but the J3 easily beat both of these guys.

The Bad:
-Phone jack on the bottom - will suck if you put it in the shirt pocket
-Big - it's very thin, but wider and longer than P3 or Walkman
-UI is ok - not great, but more intuitive than P3
-Touchscreen is mediocre - it's really hard to compare to the super-slick, easy-to-use touch screen of the Walkman
-Tiny physical buttons - you can skip, play, stop, and control volume without looking but they are hard to find since they're tiny

The Good:
-Insane sound - if you just care about this, this is it
-Insane EQ and sound settings - I'm not a big fan of altering the music but I doubt any other player can compete in this dept
-Very thin - really sleek looking and light but I prefer the look of the Walkman
-Easily syncs with Windows Media player - who needs itunes? WMP works with Walkman, J3, and P3.
-Really long battery life - the longest I ever seen. It just keeps going and going and going...

UPDATE: Player does take playlists, just make sure to switch to the non flash drive mode to enable this feature. Documentation is horrendous, but I was able to find out by searching on the web. This player is fast becoming my favorite over the Sony X-series. The lock button merely locks the touch screen and not the physical buttons which is exactly what I need when I don't want to take it out of my pocket. This is not the case with Sony as it locks everything which is really pointless. The drawback of touch screen devices such as this one is when it's not locked, battery is wasted when its in your pocket.

5So good that I bought it twice!!!  Dec 24, 2010 By Ever Diaz Acosta
This product is really good!!! The sound has no match, a superb mp3, nothing else to say.
I going to tell you a love story: I bought my first cowon j3 in July 2010, I fell in love with it inmediately, although I thought that at 189,99 it was a little pricey...the thing is that I enjoyed my new, shiny Cowon J3 8 Gb with a 16 GB Sandisk microsdhc card full of music and audiobooks untill October 26, 2010 when it was miserably stolen from me in a Transmilenio bus (Bogota's public Transportation)...I do not know how it happened, the only thing I remember is that I was trying to get into the bus and I felt that someone was pushing me, at the moment I was listening one episode the Twilight Zone Radio Series. Suddenly the sound was cut and my Cowon J3 was gone forever!!! Someone took my Cowon from my pocket and I could not identify who...it was my mistake...in Spanish it is called "to give papaya" and I gave a huge papaya that day with my Cowon half showing from my pocket, and the pocket thiefs have no mercy. Anyways, after weeks of mourning and lamentations, I was ready for a new purchase, I decided to upgrade and I considered (and tried) some of the top noch brands: the new ipod touch, Sony amoled walkman, Samsung mp3, Archos., etc; none of the could fill the shoes left by my previous Cowon J3...so I bought another one, this time I cought an offer of a refurbished one for 144,99 sold by JetAudio and I don`t regret it...I still can't tell if it is refurbished or not because to me it looks as new as the previous one, same warranty and there is no sticker or label saying it is a refurb unit.

It is highly recommended if you want high sound quality.

4Cowon J3 8GB vs Zune HD 32GB vs Ipod Classic 160GB  Mar 14, 2011 By K. Ahmed "KashMD"
Alright I'm gonna start of by saying the same as everyone else. AMAZING EQ, Sound Quality is unmatched in anything else i've used so far. Also, i am testing all three units with Shure SE310 headphones, Bose Sound Dock II and Elemental Design amp/speakers, so three distinct systems, three different types of sound but only the Cowon has been able to sound AMAZING on all three platforms.

Cowon J3 Vs. Zune HD

Basic stuff, same profile, similar in size and weight, not too much a difference there. The screen 'seems' a little more colorful and vibrant on the Zune HD then does on the Cowon J3 but ONLY when you do a side by side comparison of the two, the Cowon screen by itself is a WOW factor for most non-audiophiles and the video quality is good. The Zune UI is definitely a 'better' experience... and i put this in quotes cause the Zune interface cannot be changed, whereas if you read up on the Cowon, you will find there are other options available, haven't tried any myself, but you're more then welcome to. Battery life, Cowon +1, Zune is not bad at all either but when comparing the devices it feels like cowon > ipod = Zune i know they say its different but my ipod is like a year old so that may also have something to do with it. Cowon and Zune were bought a day apart so no difference there.

Sound Quality
I have never personally used a cowon product before but have periodically followed them over the last few years, i bought my first ipod 5G video not even sure how many years ago and it still works to this day... then got the ipod video on a trip overseas just cause of the mass storage 160GB size... but over the past bit i've been craving sound quality, so decided to start looking into the better SQ players. And if Sound Quality is what you want... then the Cowon J3, or anything with the BBE and cowon sq will do you good! Zune is also very good on sound quality, their preset EQ's are excellent, but the customization of EQ available on the Cowon allows you to adjust sound based on your ear and hearing preferences. making music sound much better to you. Cowon J3 > Zune HD > Ipod classic

Durability...
unfortunately i don't feel like cowon will outlast even my 5G ipod... but that stuff is built like a brick... i've dropped, sat on, gotten wet and it continues to work... the J3 is more fragile and requires someone with a little more sophistication to handle it and keep it from falling apart, it can't be tossed and taken on you to a ball game... but should hold up fine at the gym as long as you don't crush the screen. the Zune HD also feels more sturdy in your hand, mainly cause of the metal-like casing, i say like cause it still feels very light and thin, but is metallic not like the ipod classic metallic that feels like your holding a iron rod. Durability i would have to say Ipod Classic > Zune HD > Cowon J3

Memory
I was very disappointed, even though it is expected, that i only had a little over 7Gigs of avil. memory with this model. I actually don't have the 8GB model anymore, returned it and opted for the 32GB which was actually the one i thought i had ordered initially. but the available expansion slot on the J3 makes it a much better option to the Zune HD still nowhere near the 160GB of the ipod but for solid state and the battery life on it i'd still opt for the Cowon. So the only real difference is the Zune HD you have 32GB max and that's it. Cowon J3 you can up the 32GB one with another 32GB card to get 64GB.

Experience
The experience on the ipod cannot me matched. now i know there are a lot of Anti-Apple users out there, and they are big fans of the Cowon, as am i, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't deserve credit where they deserve. the itunes/ipod experience is very seamless... you add music to your itunes it shows up on your ipad, adjust a playlist on your ipod shows up in your itunes... very simple, very easy, very uncomplicated and does not consume any of your time trying to redo everything twice. The Zune HD comes closest to this, with its proprietary software, which is only PC compatible (I use a mac btw, which i'll talk about later) but seems to be decent at setting up the library and syncing. The WIFI on the ZuneHD is actually must handier then the Bluetooth on the Cowon, which i still haven't figured out what possible good the Bluetooth can do on this device? if you use headphones the SQ drastically drops defeating the purpose and greatest benefit of this device, and 5k/sec transfers will take you 30min to transfer any songs from a PC... but Cowon has BT and ZuneHD has WIFI... Cowon's simple drag and drop experience however, isn't all that bad once you start paying attention to where your songs are and how they are organized, just not as streamlined as ipod users will be used to... so this one goes like so Ipod>Zune HD>Cowon.

Now for the infamous Mac + Cowon Issue
I had it do some bizarre things on my first music transfer, froze, all the names went into random Asian characters and unending list in the movies named "movie" and in songs named "song" but a quick format with FAT 32 format and firmware update fixed the issue and i didn't seem to have it again after...

i may have forgotten some stuff, if you need any more info from me feel free to ask away! i did make a video but one handed operations are not my forte so it didn't really come out well, but i may decide to put it up later.

Now enjoy the music!

4Love/Hate with this thing..  Sep 12, 2010 By Paul Rooney "pcFanatic"
Managing files on the Cowon J3 feels incomplete. I'm using Cowons Media Center and managing and transferring files on this thing is a pain. I must of spent 6 hours trying to create playlists and fix tiny annoying errors like duplicates. You can't really manage files from the player itself. About the playlist function, I dont think you can create a reliable one yet. Either the files in the playlist wont showup or for me the whole playlist will just disappear after time. From what i've read Cowon are actively working on this problem.

All that aside, I still like the player. It produces outstanding video/sound and has a brilliant Eq. Screen is beautiful and navigating aint bad once you get used to it. Actually getting used to it might be a problem. The Booklet I received with this player was crap. For all the non-labeled options on this thing i'd atleast expect a decent guide included in my package. You have to go to their website support to view a guide.

I was quite disappointed with this product for the first few days and almost sent it back. But once you learn the tips/tricks of the device the pros start to outweigh the cons and it starts to grow on you. Despite my mostly negative review, i'd still give it 4 stars. It really is a good player and has alot of potential with the correct fixes. I believe Cowon will provide those fixes soon.
