1Less than pleased  Jan 29, 2008 By M. Huston
I ordered this product at the same time I ordered the DS 40 recorder. It took the company more than 10 days to simply ship the product. They stated it was sent USPS priority (which it was NOT) and shipping took another 6 days. In addition, the cost for shipping was an additional fee from what Amazon charged for the total order (almost $6.00). Still, I thought it would be worthwhile to protect my recorder, etc.

Imagine my surprise when the box finally arrived and it was large enough to fit the entire recorder box. I thought, maybe the case is large enough to actually hold the earbuds, and spare batteries. Sadly, the huge box was filled with packing material so the SMALL FLAT CLOTH case didn't get damaged. Still...there was hope. Maybe, just maybe it would be worth the money. Unfortunately, the case only holds the recorder - no earbuds, no spare batteries. The magnetic closure - doesn't stay closed. The stereo microphone that is included with the recorder, doesn't fit with the case. So the user needs to either not use the stereo microphone or deal with the case not closing at all. In addition, you can't turn the recorder ON or OFF while it's in the case. Because of the location of the power switch, it is necessary to partially remove it from the case (which isn't all bad since then you can use the stereo mic).

All in all, I'm very disappointed. If you are wavering at all between the DS 40 (with this case) and the DS 50 (with the included case) - buy the DS 50. If you're going to get the DS 40 - don't get it this one. It's not worth the money or the hassle. I'll be returning this case and going to one of my local retailers and finding a case that will carry the earbuds, spare batteries, the optional mic, AND still manage to stay closed to protect my investment.

2Better options exist  Oct 17, 2008 By Lohas addict
This hooks onto your belt and uses a magnet to stay closed. Since I usually carry my voice recorder in a bag with my computer, the belt loop is useless and I worry about the magnet erasing data from my hard disk. I find that it's better to carry the voice recorder in a case for sunglasses - the kind that's basically shaped like a tube. It fits perfectly.

5Works well  Jun 01, 2008 By Jay
The soft case for the DS40 works well. The belt loop is affixed with velcro, but the workmanship seems solid, so I am going to have faith!! :) All the bells and whistles are easily accessible, except the power, which can be manipulated through the material quite easily. The magnetic closure works fine as long as the recorder is snugged in and the stereo recording attachment is removed.

After reading some of the other reviews, I think that one of the issues to consider when deciding if this case is for you is how many chingaderas you are going to bring along and where are you going to put them. This particular case is meant to affix to a belt or strap and give you access to record improptu events. If you want to record stereo, phone, or other more intricate events and you want something to carry all the accessories, it would be better to go with a small military or police pack, or even a fanny pack.

With that said, I like my soft case and I definitely recommend.

All the best,

Jay

2Unnecessary  Jan 30, 2010 By J. L. Morris
While this accessory is fine, Olympus already includes a case with their recorder. This was not obvious when I placed the order for the recorder so I assumed I would need a case. The case is not necessary, the standard case works just as well.

2Awful belt loop - Glue velcro closed or risk losing recorder  Mar 17, 2009 By Al
I bought this case when I bought the Olympus DS-40. The case itself is fairly well designed in terms of holding the recorder and keeping the buttons accessible. For me, the magnetic clasp keeps the front closed. The major issue is the belt loop doesn't stay closed and it can allow the case to drop off your belt. I almost lost the unit several times in the first two days.

The top of the belt loop is sewn to the case. The bottom has a patch of about 1cm by 1cm velcro to keep it closed. This velcro is too weak to resist daily use and comes apart, allowing the unit to fall off your belt. What I had to do by day three is to crazy glue the velcro section closed. This has worked quite well and I haven't had any more problems.
