These days, it's getting harder to find stereo only receivers. I needed one for my garage and parties.
I really did not want to buy a home theatre system with all the extra video ports that would never be used.
This receiver rocks! Lots of power, an MP3 jack in front, optional bluetooth adapter (which I'll never use).
The AM/FM reception is very good, I'm almost 30 miles from most transmitters.
The dial cranks up to 70 for power. It is crisp and clear up to about 64. Then a little bit of distortion
enters into the picture. That's pretty respectable. Even cranked up for hours it seems to run cool enough.
Great bang for the buck and highly recommended. Take advantage of the subwoofer out and add one to your system.
I paired it with two Sony SSF-5000 speakers, and the Sony SA-W3000 subwoofer. Turns out to be a good balanced system.
I can even listen to it a quarter mile away in my sweet corn field!

I recently purchased the Sherwood RX-4503 2.1 receiver from Amazon. I currently own two Sherwood RX-4109 receivers and lost a third RX-4109, that was three years old, from overheating (see the bottom note). I think the RX-4503 has some very interesting features:
Although it is a two channel receiver, it can simulate surround sound.
It has a rear panel preamp out (single line) for a connection to a self powered sub woofer.
The specs in the supplied manual show:
Power Output, Stereo Mode, 8 Ohms THD 0.08% 40 Hz-20 Khz 2X100W
Total harmonic distortion, 8 ohms, 100W, 40 Hz-20 Khz 0.02%
My speaker system for this receiver is a pair of Polk Monitor 30 speakers and a Polk PSW10 Sub-Woofer
The Monitor 30 speakers are -3Db at 63 Hz
The PSW10 50 watt sub-woofer is -3Db at 40 Hz
The listening room is 12x14
I like the looks of this receiver and it has an uncluttered face which reminds me of the NAD receiver.
There is a push button switch on the receiver front panel that allows you to override the standby condition and fully shut down the receiver if you wish.
The remote is much better than the RX-4109 remote with a better touch feel and layout of buttons.
There are four RCA inputs and one RCA output (in addition to the preamp out). There is no phono input on this model.

External (6 channels in to take the output from a 5.1 decoder)
I found that although you can use the External input for multiple channel inputs, it also worked fine with using it as a two channel input.
On the front panel there is a removable plate that will expose a front AUX input (3/8 Mini jack) and a Blue Tooth audio input.
I currently use a Grace internet radio to feed internet audio via the Aux input. My Denon CD player feeds the CD input, My Sony cassette deck is hooked up to the tape in and out jacks. My Denon DP-300F turntable feeds the External input (using the DP-300F phono preamp).
My favorite music is vintage vocals, for example Julie london via Pandora, and I listen at moderate levels. Under these conditions the RX-4503 performed perfectly giving me well balanced and clean sound. I do not stress my gear, so I can't tell you how blasting it would sound.
I normally am not a surround sound person and prefer just two channel audio, but I did try the virtual surround sound of which there are three types.

Pressing the VS button will activate the virtual mode and each press of the button will cycle you through the stages. To return to normal stereo you push the Stereo mode button.
Listening to Julie sing, if I punch the Virtual button, there is a delay of about a second as the receiver switches modes, then the effect is as if Julie is now sitting in your lap instead of up on the stage. The effect stays between the front speakers.
Push it again to "Wide" and the image expands, but there seemed to be an increase in the bass response while the midrange dropped back a bit. It seemed to me that this effect could be of use when watching a movie.
My personal taste is to stick with the standard stereo sound, but you may prefer the surround effect.
The RX-4503 has the same caveats as the RX-4109. Don't use speakers less than 8 ohms impedance, if using 8 ohm speakers don't use system A+B, only use A or B and finally do not enclose the receiver or block ventilation.
I purchased my receiver from Amazon.com for $124.86 with free shipping. If you are interested in learning more about the RX-4503, there are a decent number of reviews online and you can download a PDF copy of the manual from a number of sources.
It's an excellent buy.

I am very amazed on the sound quality. I have this hooked up to some Sony SS-B1000 Bookshelf Speakers and they are wonderful together. I have this system hooked up to my PC and TV. I use winamp to play all my music and I recommend that on the equalizer section to bring up the preamp to bring up the volume level. Love the sub out on the back I can't wait to get one for it. I will probably get the Sony SA-W2500. I was going to get a 5.1 system but this actually works well and cheaper too. Oh yah Pandora is great on this too and my PS3 games are more alive. I used to have the Logitech Z-2300 that system rocks but this is the way to go the sound is more full.

Sherwood vs Onkyo. A long, updated review! Jul 21, 2011

I was considering this receiver and the more expensive Onkyo receiver. It finally came down to the facts that this one costs less than the Onkyo, and this Sherwood advertises 100 watts RMS vs the Onkyo's 50 watts RMS. Also, this Sherwood has a subwoofer output RCA jack which the Onkyo does not, but this one does not have dedicated 'phono' inputs that the Onkyo does. So, I just connect my phono's cables to the Sherwood's TAPE IN connections and use the phono's built-in amplifier. Even if a phono doesn't have its own amp, decent outboard phono amps are relatively inexpensive. Both receivers have their good and bad points that cancel each other out, and they both get good reviews, but all things considered, this Sherwood comes out ahead IMO.
Yes, I chose this Sherwood over the Onkyo. Maybe the Onkyo sounds better, maybe not. I did not have the opportunity to compare them side by side. All I know is the Sherwood sounds beautiful through Polk TSi100 speakers and a Polk PSW111 subwoofer! I like my music a bit loud, I usually run the volume at 55-60 for music, and around 38 for DVD's; maximum volume is 80, which would blast me out of the room.
I use it 99% of the time for music in stereo or in Dolby Headphone (also known as Dolby Virtual Speaker - a very nice included feature that works with any headphones to give more natural, wider, speaker-like sound rather than the narrow soundstage common to headphones), but I also very rarely run a DVD movie through it for 2.1 Dolby virtual surround. No, virtual surround is not the same as true surround sound, but I bought this to listen to STEREO MUSIC, not as a home theater component. I don't watch much TV or movies, since they are pretty much all crap now. I don't want to knock 2.1 virtual surround, it actually works quite well; a few times I have heard thunder rolling across the sky or a dog barking in my front yard, only to find that those sounds were actually coming from my two speakers! And a definite plus is I don't have wiring and speakers draped all over the place.
It does have six RCA inputs for 5.1 surround sound that will be output in normal Stereo (plus subwoofer if one is used), Dolby Wide, Dolby 2.1 Virtual Surround, or Dolby Headphone (if headphones are used). It took me a while to find a DVD player that has the six RCA surround sound outputs to match this receiver's inputs, but then I found the Pioneer DV610AV-K which does have the matching connectors. The two work well together; I use the DVD player mostly as a CD and SACD music player and rarely for DVDs.
Some reviewers describe this as a 'no-frills' receiver, but it does have some nice frills in addition to the features I have already mentioned. For example: Separate left/right/subwoofer volume controls; separate bass and treble tone controls; programable radio stations; front connecter for Sherwood BTR7 blu-tooth (sold separately, I don't have it); front 1/8" input jack (I use a 1/8" male-to-male cable to connect my laptop and anything else with a headphone jack to this input for internet radio/downloaded music/mp3 player. The blu-tooth and cable front connections are hidden behind a removable panel below the large right knob in the photo.); auto-shutoff (sleep timer in 10 minute increments up to 90 minutes); a remote control that controls EVERYTHING this receiver is capable of.
The only downside I have is the front control panel markings and buttons are hard to see in dim light. But the remote control is well marked, and after using the control panel buttons for a while I learned what buttons do what, without needing to read the markings.
It is now about 5 months since I purchased this, so I re-wrote much of my first review to be more objective about this receiver after a few months. Initially I gave it 5 stars, and there is no reason to lower that rating. It still sounds great! I still love it! Just connect it to decent speakers, and use quality headphones, and you should be happy with it too! What do I mean by decent speakers? Here are what I have used with this receiver: Sony SS-B1000 (fair-to-good sounding inexpensive entry-level), Dayton B652 (better sounding and cheaper than the Sony's), and Polk Audio TSi100 that I am now using (more expensive, but with a wonderful audiophile sound). This is also my first foray back into vinyl records since the 70's, and I am very pleased how my AT-LP120 vinyl player (with cartridge upgraded to AT120E) sounds through this receiver! (If I had it to do over again, I would choose the Denon DP300F phono over my Audio Technica AT-LP120 phono. If you are thinking of getting a phono, read my review of the AT-LP120 to see the problems I had.)
By the way, when positioning my left speaker, the speaker terminals touched the metal filigree of my shelf. There was a quick 'buzz', then silence. I thought "crap, I've ruined something". But this receiver had saved itself by defaulting to standby, and when I turned it back on, ALL WAS WELL, everything worked great! This would have killed the left channel of the receiver I owned way back in the early 70's. (I am just now getting back into serious music listening after all those years.) I loved that '70s' system; a Panasonic receiver, Technics turntable, Akai reel-to-reel, and a cassette recorder/player (Sankyo or Sanyo, I think). It was a fairly expensive, high-tech system for the time, but even after all those years I can tell that this modern Sherwood with my Pioneer, Audio Technica, and Polk components sounds better. (Also HP laptop for internet radio [Jango] and music downloads. I don't really consider it a component, but I suppose it is when playing into my music system).
If you have read this far, you probably have eyestrain. But I'm sure you can tell I am happy with this receiver.

This receiver was exactly what we needed. We have two side speakers and a powered sub-woofer that we use with it. Nothing fancy. Hook up the speakers and our CD player and it works like a charm. The place where we have it (the aisle of our horse barn) is a dusty and humid environment where we have to replace the receiver every couple years. For the price of the Sherwood unit, it doesn't hurt too badly!
